The passion for oriental beauty and history is captured in the art of collecting Asian art and antiques. Adding some Asian Ambience to your home can delight the senses and trigger the imagination. Precious pottery with vibrant colors, the alluring sent of ancient Blackwood carved pieces and the feel of intricate gold leaf brushstrokes on many Asian sculptures and paintings are treasured attributes of this ancient culture. Although distinctive, this décor style is a wonderful compliment to any Contemporary, European, or Traditional setting in your home. Fortunately for San Diegans, we may find these valuable and gorgeous treasures at Asia Direct Imports without the travel expense! Owner and world traveler, Jane McKee Moore, is an expert on adding Zen to your home by way of Asian antiques and these are her recommendations.
1) In your opinion, how do Asian antiques and art inspire the imagination and how are they of value?
We all need a space to relax and recharge our bodies and minds, whether in a home or office. Being around Asian pieces adds a sense of serenity and calm that we all need in our hectic lives. Having an environment that allows us some peace can aid all of our senses, whether it is creative or regenerative.
2) How does a homeowner incorporate this Trend into their overall decor, be it Traditional, Modern, or European?
Asian blends with any style of decor due to the vast array of materials and rich colors used, as well as the delicate to strong designs available to complete any room. A little or a lot of Asian influence can be added into all environments, to create a soothing and comfortable atmosphere in which to spend time. A key to decorating is to maintain continuity throughout the space with pieces placed appropriately in all areas, inside and out.
3) Where do you travel in Asia to collect these precious, unique items and what are some of your favorite pieces?
Every 3-4 months we travel from town to town, looking for unique pieces for our stores. As Westerners we see beauty in some of the most common items, pieces that can be used for many different purposes in our decor. The most common of items can blend so beautifully with casual or elegant, Contemporary, Tuscan, European or eclectic decor. Old windows and screens are a favorite as they can become doors, decorative panels behind sofas and beds, or as wall art lining a hallway or outside space or even used horizontally as trays, table tops and seating.
4) Of your collection at Asia Direct Imports, which of your Asian elements is the most cherished in any type of decor?
China is one of the oldest living cultures. I feel its appeal is the ancient yet timeless aspect that we are able to integrate into all other styles that adds a peaceful, elegant, and international feel to any space. We are a global community now and with that comes the opportunity to blend the wonderful styles of the old into the new. The Asian style is so long-lived and diverse that every space imaginable can benefit from a touch of this exotic style.
