Décor Dialogue: Coastal Chic
Since it is summer in sunny San Diego, we decided to go to the Beach for some Décor Dialogue! Instead of finding it on the sand, however, we found it at Interior to the Exterior in the heart of the Cedros Design District. Each with a warm Aloha, owners, Tamara Webster and Rina Torres welcomed me in to their cozy-refreshing design studio and boutique to ask them a few questions about how to turn your house into a beach bungalow that is Coastal Chic.
Q: What are 5 key elements of Coastal Chic—as a Trend in interior design?
A: Coastal Chic plays on bringing the captivating aspects of the seashore within the coastal design space. From the pastel colors of the ocean sky and weathered smooth sea glass – to the deep rich blues and greens of the ever-changing ocean – and to the subtle hues of shadow, sand and shells -color is key. Coastal spaces often dictate modesty as well – creating simplicity and a sense of being able to breathe in that fresh abundant coastal air is an element we cannot forget. Comfort is also another key element – having cozy furnishings that pronounce Coastal Chic – invite you in to relax and kick off your shoes. Coastal themes are a must to be implemented with shells, nautical relics and other unique finds – to define a coastal home. Ownership – the personality of the home owner or entire family is the main key element that ultimately ties and intertwines all of the Coastal Chic design elements into that one of kind – lived in – beach house – beach home!
Q: How do you make this design trend work year round?
A: Because the Seasons of the seashore only revive and reinvent all year round with rough and calm waters, sky scapes, driftwood and lifestyle that endlessly inspire and incorporate the Coastal Chic home so well.
Q: This being our Living Room issue—of our 6 part Room-by-Room series…what are 3 great elements to making this room in particular “Coastal Chic”?
A: The Living Room is the focal point and heart of any home. In this room in particular – for Coastal Chic we need to have space with color, but not the confines of too much color or too dark of a color. This room needs to beckon one into the comfort and soul of the coast. Remnants of the sand and sea should subtly break through and personality should be accented with framed photos of family and friends.
