PREMIER HOME DESIGN & DECOR 5 TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL REMODEL
HARDLY THE SOLE DOMAIN OF CONTRACTORS AND BUILDERS, YOUR INTERIOR DESIGNER SHOULD BE INVOLVED FROM THE EARLIEST PLANNING STAGES OF A HOME REMODELING PROJECT.
There is no one better to ensure the harmonious union of the aesthetic with the structural and form with function, not to mention making sure all of the less glamorous details (electric outlets, air vents) are right where you didn’t even know you needed them to be.
We were lucky to sit down with internationally acclaimed designer Kari Arendsen of Intimate Living Interiors (ILI), look for her in the upcoming Hi-Design International, Hong Kong, hot off designing a Residence at the Ritz Carlton in Philly. Back in her Solana Beach showroom she gave us her Top 5 tips for pulling off a beautiful, virtually stress-free remodel that reflects your lifestyle and personality.
1 Plan for the big picture Go through the entire design process from floor plan to throw pillow so you have a big picture budget rather than just construction or just decor. This will save you money in the long run and ensure that you reach that final vision. Always leave 10-20% in the budget for last minute changes/ additions/etc. We work to identify the most logical sequence of phases that will maximize both your time and money, should your project need to be implemented over time.
2 Built-ins and Architectural details are definitely worth the investment – Adding architectural detail and built-in’s to a space brings a distinguished look that serves multiple purposes. Not only can they offer additional storage, it’s also a great opportunity to insert custom lighting that adds layers of texture and dimension.
3 Be sure to create a home your family will thrive in – Collaborate with each member of your family (even take into account the 4 legged furry ones) and make wish lists or look books that reflect their personal style and need for space. At ILI we have a “Client Questionnaire’” that reveals the intimate details of our clients’ daily function and lifestyle as well as personal goals and sources of inspiration.
4 I believe that lighting is the most important element in design Incorporating unique fixtures and an unexpected custom lighting plan is a smart separation from the ordinary. Be sure to add the appropriate lighting that will serve and capitalize on the function of a space.
5 Blending the Reclaimed with the refined and the unexpected with the essential – This is our golden recipe for smart, personal and purposeful design. As a designer, I can see extraordinary applications for ordinary things. Reuse, re-purpose and refine; this will set you apart and often times save you money.
Hire a Designer that has an established network of industry professionals. A successful remodel depends on every member of the team.
