Stunning San Diego Architecture

Monday Dec 19, 2011  San Diego is home to some architectural monuments as well as some more recent masterworks.

This weekend I was introduced to some of San Diego’s architectural treasures. First The Salk Institute, designed by world-renowned architect Louis Kahn in the early 1960’s, the Salk received a 25-Year Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) among many honors. It is something every San Diegan must see.

I wasn’t able to get inside to get the full courtyard experience but this photo from The Salk Institute gives you an idea… WOW!

Our second stop was The Neurosciences Institute just down the road in La Jolla. Described as a “scientific monastary”  the Institute’s architects, Tod Williams Billie Tsien & Associates, were challenged to design a facility that reflected the Institute’s unique belief that creativity in science is best fostered in an environment with few constraining rules and with unlimited opportunities for discovery and communication. Mission accomplished.
